Piskabon and Federashon Kooperativanan Uní di Produkshon recently organized a two-week fisheries training for local fishers on Bonaire. The training took place at Fundashon Antriol Avanti and focused on themes such as personal development, future-oriented and sustainable fishing, hygiene and fish quality, entrepreneurship, and sea safety. With this broad approach, the organizers aim to strengthen fishers in their profession and contribute to a sustainable future for fisheries on Bonaire.

Practical Knowledge for a Sustainable Future

During the training, local fishers received valuable knowledge and skills to practice their profession in a sustainable and safe manner. The training was made possible by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), which regularly supports sustainable fisheries initiatives. Topics such as future-oriented fishing, the protection of sea turtles and coral, and the use of sustainable fishing techniques were thoroughly covered. Attention was also given to the protection of vulnerable species such as the queen conch (karkó). By combining these topics, the training contributes to a fisheries sector that balances economic interests with nature conservation. In total, 14 fishers successfully completed the training and received their certificates.

Focus on Personal Growth and Quality

In addition to technical knowledge, the training also emphasized the personal development of fishers. Topics included communication skills, dealing with unexpected or stressful situations at sea, and the importance of personal care in daily work. Hygiene and fish quality were also addressed: how to properly handle and store catches to ensure they are suitable for consumption and sale. These skills are crucial for the professional practice of the trade and contribute to greater safety, resilience, and market value for the fishers.

Local Collaboration as the Key to Success

The training was made possible through collaboration between several local organizations that combined their expertise. This approach enabled the development of a broad and practical program tailored to the day-to-day reality of fishers on Bonaire. Participants not only learned about sustainable fishing practices but also received a basic first aid lesson, learned about communication tools such as VHF radios, and gained insights into entrepreneurship and legal responsibilities. Thanks to this collaboration, fishers were strengthened in multiple areas, with attention to both their craft and their role within the community.
