WWF-Netherlands is delighted with the additional financial support from the Nationale Postcode Loterij for the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA). This contribution enables the implementation of a comprehensive program in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, strengthening existing projects and enhancing collaboration. The initiative supports WWF-NL’s ambition to realize more regional programs with a greater impact on nature restoration and climate resilience.

Regional Program for Climate Resilience
The three-year project “Conservation and Restoration of Key Habitats” focuses on improving the climate resilience of the Caribbean region. This is achieved by uniting local efforts to protect and restore coastal forests, mangroves, seagrass, and coral reefs. By integrating projects into one regional program, costs are reduced, efficiency is increased, and the overall impact is significantly amplified. The program is led by DCNA, with WWF-Netherlands (WWF-NL) providing support in terms of expertise and funding.

The Role of WWF-NL
WWF-NL contributes valuable knowledge and expertise from the international WWF network, including coastal restoration experience from Colombia, collaboration with the Global Mangrove Alliance, and other insights from WWF’s global network. This support helps project implementers on the six Caribbean islands share best practices and strengthen local restoration initiatives. The ultimate goal is to create resilient coastal areas across all Caribbean regions where WWF-Netherlands is active. “Collaboration is key,” says Monique de Water, Program Manager for WWF-NL’s Dutch Caribbean program. “By joining forces, we can achieve greater impact while simultaneously strengthening and better aligning existing programs.”

Education and Policy Change
In addition to nature restoration, the program focuses on raising awareness about the importance of natural areas. This is achieved through educational programs, publications, and community outreach activities. Furthermore, DCNA works with WWF-NL, governments, and other stakeholders to improve policies, secure funding, and establish legal frameworks for resilient coasts that benefit both nature and people in the long term.
