Beaches at the Brink
The beaches of the Dutch Caribbean are more than scenic beauty. They are vital ecosystems that support biodiversity, protect coasts, and sustain livelihoods. Yet their condition is cause for deep concern. Accelerating erosion, coastal development, and climate change are stripping away these natural buffers, while critical wildlife, such as sea turtles, face mounting challenges. The 2024 State of Nature Report paints a sobering picture: urgent, coordinated action is needed to protect these sandy lifelines.
The Big Picture
The beaches of the Dutch Caribbean islands are shaped by their unique geology. On Bonaire and Klein Bonaire, most beaches consist of coral rubble and small coral pebbles. Aruba, Curaçao, and St. Maarten are generally known for their white sand beaches. In contrast, the beaches of St. Eustatius and Saba are composed of dark volcanic sand.
These beaches provide essential breeding and foraging habitat for coastal birds, and most importantly serve as critical nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles. While the 2024 State of Nature Report focuses on Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba, similar threats are seen on the beaches of Aruba, Curaçao, and St. Maarten. Across the region, sea level rise, stronger storms, increased sargassum, poorly planned coastal development, and sand mining are all accelerating erosion and degrading habitat quality.
Sea Turtles
The report highlights the irreplaceable role of beaches as nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles, particularly hawksbill, green, and leatherback turtles. Monitoring shows that nesting activity remains concentrated on only a handful of beaches, making them disproportionately important for species survival. However, these sites face multiple threats: erosion is washing away nesting areas, artificial lighting disorients hatchlings, and human disturbance, from off-road vehicles to unregulated tourism. All these factors disrupt nesting females.
Charting a Path Forward
Safeguarding beaches requires an integrated approach: protecting remaining dune systems, restoring eroded areas with native vegetation, regulating coastal development, and managing tourism and recreational use. Sea turtle conservation measures such as light management, seasonal beach closures, and public education must also be scaled up. Cross-island cooperation and data sharing, particularly on erosion rates and nesting trends, will be key to guiding effective interventions.
Regional Program
The upcoming Conservation and Restoration of Key Habitats Program, led by the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance and funded through the Dutch Postcode Lottery, WWF-NL, and Bloomberg Philanthropies, will prioritize these recommendations. By protecting beaches and neighboring habitats, enhancing enforcement, controlling invasive species, and piloting large-scale reforestation projects, the program aims to give nature a fighting chance. With continued collaboration across all six islands, and by grounding efforts in local knowledge and science, we can rebuild resilience and secure a greener future for generations to come.
